Activating a Surface

The use of hexamthylene diisocyanate (HDI) in toluene with di-n-butyltin dilaurate (DBTDL) as a catalyst.
This creates NCO free groups.

This was preformed on polyether urethane and used to graft sulfobetaines onto it. (note the use of jeffamine spacer is used to graft sulfobetaines to the PU)

“Platelet adhesion on a polyurethane surface grafted with a zwitterionic monomer of sulfobetaine via a Jeffamine spacer”

What is a jeffamine spacer?
Jeffamine spacer is a compound like polyethylene glycol (PEG) which is a soft polyether chain. It can greatly reduce interfacial energy between goal structure and surface of substrate. It also has a high mobility inaqueous environments. Poly(ethylene oxide) PEO spacers were used to achieve this, reason why jeffamine spacer is more effective is that the amino group is more active than the hydroxy group of PEO.

Poor Journalism in NZ

Each time I read a article being from Target this TV program on TV3 in New Zealand; I am disappointed in some of the conclusions and assumptions.
Sheer presence of some microorganisms such as Bacillus Faecalis does not indicate presence of feaces. I would like to make it clear that it gives a POSSIBILTY of feaces being present as a sustrate but does not rule out that Bacillus Faecalis could of grown on other substrates perhapes saturated amounts of glucose?

Now the latest in poor assumptions and I would like to point out that some journalism is poor and unresearched, leading to yet again misleading news.
Remember the myth about recycled chopsticks??

NZ Herald decided to have a stab at it
http://www.nzherald.co.nz/section/2/story.cfm?c_id=2&objectid=10459337
I would like to let people know that, usually and I am not vouching for the china man; that hydrogen peroxide is used to bleach as well as that it is a known disinfectant.

(Also going to add that this chemical dissociates to water and oxygen and is most thermodyanmically stable as that form) Hydrogen Peroxide is GRAS status by the FDA (Generally Regarded As Safe).

Presence of this substance in the chopsticks as reminance is due to no dehydrate process which I would find essential.
Other assumptions about recycling and so on I will leave out of this as the topic would be very politically stirred.

Yet again a poorly researched article in New Zealand Journalism!!!
I am not saying I am superior to the rest just saying NZ needs to get its journalism bucked up!!!

The news here is usually pointless and senseless compartively to other country news; it is so bad until a lot of my friends have decided to stop watching the news as well as reading national news in the news paper section!!
